Lahar alarm

Kia ora

Today we built Mt Ruapehu in the sandpit. We also made the Whangaehu River valley, the plain below the mountain and the railway bridge at Tangiwai. We wanted to learn how the lahar destroyed the bridge in 1953 causing the Tangiwai Disaster. Kora and Ariana poured lots of water into the crater we had made on top of our mountain. It whoosed down the side of the mountain and into the river valley. The bridge collapsed and bits of our train fell into the river. After that, we watched a short video about what do do if you are on Mt Ruapehu when the lahar siren sounds.  Now I know how to keep safe from a lahar if one happens when I am on a mountain.  Here is my Hazard Notice with the most important information.

Lego Challenge

Today I made some Lego. My mum teacher challenged me to make something for transport and linked to Covid-19.
I made a bulldozer and trailer that is transporting an ambulance. The reason I built this is because of people can die or get really sick from Covid-19. Ambulances are very important.

What I liked about this task was building the Lego.
What I found hard was thinking about what to build.
What I enjoyed was playing with it.

Whitebait Fritters

This term for our novel study, Mrs A read us Whitebait Fritters
which is a novel written by a Kiwi author Kingi McKinnon.
My favourite part in Whitebait Fritters was when when they caught the fish.

To wind up our learning we decided to make some fake whitebait fritters
because we can’t afford to buy real whitebait.
We used grated potato to take the place of whitebait and mixed
it with eggs and onions. They were really tasty. Then we had to write
out the recipe, put it on a Google Drawing and add some images.
You can see my work below.

Maths 1 - Geometry Safari

this term for maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D geometry.  Jaxson and I were in a team. We went on a Geometry Safari around the school grounds to see how many 2D  and 3D shapes we could find. Then we had to write what we had found into a table. You can see ours below.

Maths 1

This term for maths we have been learning about 2D and 3D geometry.  Jaxon and I were

ours below.

Science: Me and my DNA.

This term for science we are learning all about how the human body
works and how special we all are. We are also trying to learn how
to think and act more like a scientist. So, Miss Fletcher asked us to
look at our faces in the mirror and write down notes about what we
look like. The information had to be precise and clear so that when
someone read it, it would help them find the person it described quickly.
It was a bit like being a detective. You had to look and notice things
carefully.

Miss Fletcher said that what we look like depends on our mother and
father. Making a new human is a bit like making a cake.  You get some
ingredients from your mum and some from your dad. The ingredients
are called DNA. Everybody’s cake is different to everyone else’s.

Miss Fletcher said the person with the most efficient description
was Andrew J as he wrote: My hair is 1 cm long all over. He is the
only student in Team Moana with a haircut like that so he was able
to be identified very easily. You can read my description below.
The sentences highlighted in blue are the ones that Miss Fletcher
said were not precise and clear enough.

For the last few weeks we have been reading a book written by Kingi McKinnon and the book is called Whitebait Fritters. We have been creating animations. The one that  I am blogging is my animation. Creating the animation was hard because is takes so long to think of stuff.  I also found it easy because the book helped us. The learning behind the task was  to help the author appeal his book to 2020 kids.

Week Two Activities

Hi,
Tanner here again. I have been super busy since Christmas. I stayed with my Poppa for three days and went fishing - he catches crayfish. We had a big family day for Christmas then we went to Tokerau Beach to ride our quad bikes on Boxing Day. I stayed with my other Nana and Poppa for three days and built traps for fish and rabbits. I haven't had a chance to go on my computer as I have been kept very busy. But, here is four activities from week 2 that I have been working on. I hope to do week 3 and 4 next week. The holidays should quiet down a little now. I hope you enjoy and you are having a great summer.
